CLEVELAND -- If Maverick Carter is going to be Cavaliers swingman LeBron James' defacto agent, he'll at least get some support from Todd Ramasar.

Ramasar, 25, is the agent for Warriors point guard Baron Davis. Carter, 23, was James' former teammate at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and works for Nike.

Ramasar was Davis' teammate at UCLA for two years (they were both part of the Bruins' 1997 recruiting class).

In his first six NBA seasons, Davis has had three different agents, including Arn Tellem and Jerome Stanley (under whom he accepted a six-year, $84 million maximum contract extension with New Orleans in 2002).

He then signed on with Ramasar, then 23 years old.

Ramasar quit law school to manage Davis' affairs and start his own company, Life Sports Management. Needless to say, he understands James' decision to severe ties with Goodwin Sports Management on Monday.

''In any business, it helps out when you can trust the man that's doing business for you or speaking on your behalf,'' Ramasar told San Francisco writers. ''I think it makes your job easier and I think they're more comfortable. I guess you can kind of go to sleep easier at night knowing that there's someone you trust handling everything for you.''

People thought Davis was crazy for signing on with a 23-year-old agent. There has been much speculation nation-wide about James' decision, as well.

''I signed Baron when I was 23 years old, and I always say to all my brothers, clients, friends and family, I always make decisions I know isn't going to jeopardize the people I love,'' Ramasar said.

''It's motivation for me. Trust me, if an agent says that, then what they're really doing is insulting Baron, because they're saying Baron doesn't have the intelligence to bring on somebody who can manage him. You got to think a lot of people that are successful have gotten the big break ... so why not have your break come with somebody you know?''

The details of James' agent situation are not presently clear. He must wait 15 days after filing the paperwork with the NBA Players Association that he was firing Aaron Goodwin.

Indications are that Carter, along with James' road manager, Randy Mims, and close friend, Chris Paul, will handle many of the decisions that an agent would normally make.
