Agent says Plaxico Burress won't be trouble for Giants, will report to camp

With Jeremy Shockey gone, the Giants' last remaining pre-camp headache appears to be Plaxico Burress. But there's nothing to worry about there, according to his agent, who said the receiver definitely will be in camp on time. Drew Rosenhaus, Burress' agent, told the Daily News Monday that his client will report to camp at the University at Albany Thursday morning with the rest of the Giants. And the receiver plans to be there whether he has a new deal in place or not.

That's important, because according to sources familiar with the negotiations, a new deal is not the certainty Burress has recently made it out to be. One source said the sides remain far apart, and the Giants "have gone about as far as they're willing to go."

Still, Burress has no plans to do what he did in June, when he sat out the team's mandatory minicamp because he was unhappy with the slow progress of talks.

"I don't think that we've ever had discussions about him holding out," Rosenhaus said yesterday. "That's not him. Plaxico will be at camp regardless of the status of the negotiations. We've been able to separate the negotiations from what Plax has to do for the team."

Burress has said several times in recent weeks that he was close to getting an extension on his contract, which has three years and about $10.5 million remaining. However, two sources yesterday indicated the sides aren't as close as they appeared, though talks are continuing.

Burress apparently is seeking a deal "pretty close" to what some of the other top receivers have gotten during the offseason. He believes he should be paid in the neighborhood of Larry Fitzgerald (four years, $40 million), Javon Walker (six years, $55 million), Terrell Owens (three years, $27 million) and Randy Moss (three years, $27 million). In other words, he's seeking something close to $9 million per year.
