Baker drawing interest around the leaguePosted March 6th, 2010 It was a surprise when the Patriots cut tight end Chris Baker on Thursday, and even with 48 hours of hindsight, it’s still a bit of a headscratcher.The 30-year-old Baker received a five-year deal before the start of the 2009 season, was dutiful in his attempts to try and pick up the New England offense (I witnessed him staying after practice during training camp on at least two occasions to work with Tom Brady) and was a positive presence in the locker room. You could argue that the numbers were not where the Patriots would have liked them to be (14 catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns), but the tight ends were only a minimal part of the passing game this year.
Anyway, Baker’s agent is just as confused as the rest of us. In an e-mail to me, Jonathan Feinsod said, “Chris, as he always has over the past eight seasons, tried to do everything he could to help his team win. He has always put his teams needs ahead of his own.” A league source indicated to me on Friday that “there has been a lot of surprise that he was released, and much interest from several teams.” That was proven to be the case when ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday Baker will pay a visit to Seattle. In addition, a league source indicates that Baker has at least two other visits on the horizon. What do you guys think — should they have dumped Baker? And why? |
