Cheaters Beware! Slaps to The Wrist Can Hurt!Posted May 13th, 2008 Source:bleacherreport.com If the NCAA were the disappointed mothers, and the players, coaches, and boosters were the children acting up, this is how the conversation would go. "Now this is going to hurt me more than its going to hurt you." Followed by a spanking that does not hurt. There might be a punishment of being grounded for 2 weeks also. With good behavior, however, it could be reduced to nothing. This type of punishment never stopped me from doing anything bad as a child. Today I do not find it to be any more effective in the world of sports. Cheating is prevalent all across the board. Kelvin Sampson makes hundreds of illegal phone calls to recruits and was punished, but was it severe enough? My guess would be no seeing as how he was caught doing the EXACT SAME THING a year later. Cheating has been going on since the beginning of competition. It will never stop, however, there are ways to weed out the cheaters. By greatly stiffening penalties, players, coaches, and boosters will think twice before breaking the rules. Lets pretend that O.J. Mayo is guilty and he has been handed down the most severe penalty in history for receiving benefits. A one year ban from the NCAA and a ban on being drafted until restitution has been made, AND USC forfeits any game in which O.J. Mayo played in. I don't know about you, but that would make me think twice before accepting money from an agent. My point is, punish these cheaters like you mean it. Cheating will never stop but it can be greatly reduced by imposing penalties that actually makes it look like we care about curbing this problem.
