Flores is a man without a horsePosted April 29th, 2008 Source:msn.foxsports.com In the space of 48 hours, jockey David Flores went from having two possibilities in the Derby to none.Despite abandoning Bob Black Jack in favor of El Gato Malo for the Santa Anita Derby on April 5, Flores was able to get back on Bob Black Jack for the Derby. But that was before Behindatthebar won the Lexington Stakes on April 19. Flores then had to choose between Bob Black Jack and Behindatthebar. On Saturday, when there was still a very slight chance Bob Black Jack might not get into the race based on graded stakes earnings, Flores and his agent, Brad Pegram, elected to ride Behindatthebar.
James Kasparoff, the trainer of Bob Black Jack, then signed up Richard Migliore, who had ridden Bob Black Jack to his second-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby. Kasparoff also asked Migliore to come to Churchill Downs on Monday to give Bob Black Jack his final workout for the Derby. But shortly after training hours on Monday, trainer Todd Pletcher announced that Behindatthebar would not run in the Derby. That left Flores without a mount. "It's unfortunate," Pegram said Monday. "We had to make a decision on Saturday. Todd called to tell me he wasn't running and would point for the Preakness." Flores will still be at Churchill Downs on Saturday to ride Golden Balls in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic. Pegram will still have action in the Derby. He also represents Mike Smith, who rides Gayego. |
