Lone Star horse goes into lake

A horse at Lone Star Park lost his action during a turf sprint Saturday, broke through the inside rail, and fell into an infield lake, not surfacing until his body was removed later.

The horse's jockey, Bryan McNeil, broke his left arm when he was unseated in the incident.

Track officials said they believe that the horse, Mr. Smee, died or was in shock before going into the lake. He sustained an injury in his hind end that was still being pinpointed through a postmortem exam, Lone Star stewards said on Sunday. The spill happened during the running of the 11th and final race of the day.

McNeil has had his arm set at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, said his agent, Larry Spraker. He is scheduled to see a specialist. A timetable for his return has not been determined, Spraker said, but plans are for McNeil to ride next at Remington Park.

Mr. Smee, a 5-year-old gelding, won 7 of 38 starts and $109,756.
