Game Time: LeBron James -- All Right, Now It's Getting Weird (The Mav Carter Pendant Story)

Posted July 17th, 2010
I wanted to write about Luis Scola today, I really did. I wanted to talk about how good Daryl Morey has to feel that he was able to lock in Scola for an annual number below $10 million per year in a goofy free agent market that has seen $6 million and $7 million per year deals for guys about whom we know either too little (Amir Johnson, Wesley Matthews) or too much (Drew Gooden, Quentin Richardson, who are both seemingly in a race to occupy a spot on every NBA team's roster at some point in their respective careers).

Chicago-based sports agent Mark Bartelstein disagrees with New Orleans Hornets' decision to withdraw contract offer to Luther Head

Posted July 17th, 2010
LAS VEGAS – Chicago-based agent Mark Bartelstein said he plans to look at all matters of recourse against the New Orleans Hornets for backing out of their deal to offer his client, free-agent shooting guard Luther Head a two-year contract.

Randy Moss finally hires an agent

Posted July 17th, 2010
Randy Moss has finally decided on an agent to represent him for what will likely be the last big contract of his career. Moss has hired Joel Segal of BEST Football, which boasts clients such as Reggie Bush, Michael Vick, Lee Suggs, Will Smith (the Saints defensive end, not the actor/singer), and Chris Johnson. Aside from Moss, Segal represents Patriots Gerard Warren and Brandon Tate. You can scope out the full list of clients by clicking here. Moss has said this offseason that this will likely be his last with the Patriots because the Patriots “don’t pay,” though the deal he got a few years ago was certainly at market value. I think Vince Wilfork would also disagree with that sentiment as well, though Logan Mankins is probably on Moss’ side. Contrary to popular belief, the Pats do pay, they just don’t usually overpay. Mankins has certainly been given a reasonable offer, but he is being unreasonable in his demands.

Sources: NCAA questions four of UNC's top players

Posted July 17th, 2010
NCAA investigators questioned some of the best football players at the University of North Carolina between Monday and Tuesday about possible improper benefits received from non-university personnel, according to multiple sources close to the situation and school's athletic program.

UNC athletics director Dick Baddour confirmed Thursday that the NCAA had been on campus to interview several athletes, but did not specify what players or sports were involved. Sources familiar with the probe spoke to The Fayetteville Observer, but asked that their names not be used because they are in sensitive positions.

Atlanta-based NFL agents bracing for labor chaos

Posted July 17th, 2010
When all of the NFL draft picks are signed in the coming weeks, the 38 NFL Players Association-certified agents based in Georgia will have negotiated contracts worth close to $200 million.

However, with the ongoing labor dispute and possible lockout for the 2012 season, that gushing river of cash and their commissions could dry up.

2011 NFL Draft Preview - Cortez Allen

Posted July 8th, 2010
Cortez Allen, CB, Citadel
The small-school ranks produce some very exciting corners who combine size and speed that even the FBS schools can't match. Names like Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Ladarius Webb, and Corey Graham come to mind. Next spring, it might be the Citadel's Cortez Allen that everyone is talking about. He's big and fast and exploded on the scene as a junior last fall. He's sure to get plenty of attention from the NFL this fall.

Posted July 8th, 2010
Cristiano Ronaldo is the proud father of a baby boy, the soccer star announced via Twitter on Saturday.

After an intense week on the World Cup pitch, the news comes nothing short of the gossip equivalent of Fourth of July fireworks.

Ronaldo's tweet linked to a statement about his new little bundle, revealing the athlete and Armani underwear spokesman will maintain primary custody of the child.

Most Valuable Vegetable

Posted July 8th, 2010
For Wilmington Blue Rocks fans at Frawley Stadium, the wait to see Mr. Celery can sometimes seem endless.

The team’s offbeat mascot, who turns 10 years old with a birthday celebration at Sunday’s home game, comes onto the field only when the Rocks score.

If impatience for a Mr. Celery appearance is running rampant in the stands, you can bet that Mark Bailey, the young man in the green vegetable costume under the stands, feels the same.

Penn State's Chafie Fields: It's a Happy Valley for Player Turned Agent

Posted July 8th, 2010
Chafie Fields doesn't come across as a stereotypical sports agent because he isn't one. Dressed in a t-shirt and a light warm-up suit at a recent football clinic for kids, he still looks the part of the athlete even though he hung up his cleats a long time ago.

More importantly, he stands out because of his humility. "It's nice to stay in the game," he said of his representation of some of the top names in the NFL, such as last year's leading rusher, Chris Johnson, LaRon Landry, and Philadelphia Eagles first-round pick, Brandon Graham.
