What was Pete Carroll's part in the USC scandal?

Posted June 10th, 2010
Now that he's the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, people have been intimating for months that Pete Carroll left USC just in the nick of time. As the NCAA investigated the alleged violations that have now led to what amounts to a near-death penalty against one of college football's most storied programs, people in and around Seattle are doing an interesting dance with all of this information. On one hand, the penalties against the USC football team comprise a major advantage to any other competitive Pac-10 team, and the Washington Huskies (currently coached by former SC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian) are one of those teams. And any blight on the hated Trojans will go over well at Montlake. On the other hand, there is absolutely no way that Carroll wasn't aware of what was going on with Reggie Bush(notes) and others during his nine-year tenure with the university. Right?

NFL Draft 2011 Prospect Report

Posted June 4th, 2010
Russell Wilson, QB, North Carolina State

Wilson acts as a multi-sport athlete for NC State; playing quarterback in the fall and pitching in the spring. Though he may have what it takes to play in the MLB, his real talent is displayed on the gridiron. The focal point of the Wolfpack's offense, Wilson displays the leadership, maturity, and raw, yet developed, talent that is needed to be a solid NFL quarterback.

A story posted on the Times website on Friday reported that Bledsoe's high school coach, Maurice Ford, paid the rent at a home that Bledsoe and his mother, Maureen Reddick, lived in during Bledsoe's senior year in high school.

What a Past NCAA Infractions Finding Foretells for Trojan Basketball (and Tim Floyd)

Posted June 4th, 2010
With good reason, the imminent release by the NCAA Committee On Infractions of its report on alleged violations by USC has led to much discussion on what said report will have to say regarding the school's football program, and what sanctions will be imposed on it. While there is justified concern that the also crooked basketball program will 'take one for the team', and absorb the brunt of the NCAA's wrath, there has not been much talk regarding what USC basketball did - particularly under Tim Floyd - and what sanctions are justified by that condict, given the history of NCAA enforcement.

Agent, Jones say Whiteside deserving of spot in NBA

Posted June 4th, 2010
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - As a sports agent, it is Andre Buck's job to accentuate the positive and refute or spin the negative in the best interests of his client.

Buck, who represents former Marshall basketball star Hassan Whiteside, finds the first task a simple one, primarily because Buck is genuine when calling his possible NBA Draft lottery pick "humorous and fun-loving; he's a great kid."

Agent: Moss Update

Posted June 4th, 2010
Yesterday I passed along the news from Randy Moss’ former agent Tom DiPiero that Moss would finish his career without a sports agent. DiPiero and Moss had been together since Moss was in high school. Now it appears that Moss is actively pursuing a new agent, and there are plenty that would love to represent the future Hall-of-Fame WR. He seems to be specifically looking for an agent that can market him for sponsorships and commercials to maximize his value as he nears the end of his career. Here’s what he told the Boston Herald:

What’s the holdup? BCS came prepared, NCAA you’re on the clock

Posted May 26th, 2010
It seems as if the BCS has a contingency plan to deal with the USC scandal all along. While the NCAA dragged their feet for 6 years uncovering what took Yahoo! Sports 8 months to discover, the BCS actually met back in 2007 and drew up a a policy calling for teams’ BCS appearances and BCS titles to be vacated when major rules violations subsequently are discovered and the institutions are sanctioned by the NCAA. Current BCS executive director Bill Hancock confirmed the provision Wednesday to USA Today.
