Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State

Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State
Kyle Wilson provided all of the senior leadership for a very good Boise State team in 2009. Wilson has very few flaws in his game, and only his lack of elite measurables will push him into the latter stages of the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Baker drawing interest around the league

It was a surprise when the Patriots cut tight end Chris Baker on Thursday, and even with 48 hours of hindsight, it’s still a bit of a headscratcher.

The 30-year-old Baker received a five-year deal before the start of the 2009 season, was dutiful in his attempts to try and pick up the New England offense (I witnessed him staying after practice during training camp on at least two occasions to work with Tom Brady) and was a positive presence in the locker room. You could argue that the numbers were not where the Patriots would have liked them to be (14 catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns), but the tight ends were only a minimal part of the passing game this year.

Dansby and More!!!

All the talk about fiscal restraint in an uncapped year turned out to be a lot of hot air on the first day of the NFL's free-agency period.

The dollars were flying furiously yesterday as the Bears lavished defensive end Julius Peppers with $40 million in guaranteed money, the Dolphins made Karlos Dansby the league's third-highest-paid linebacker with $22 million guaranteed, and the Ravens prepared to reward wide receiver Anquan Boldin after landing him in a trade with the Cardinals.

NFL free agency begins Friday without cap

NEW YORK — The NFL has swallowed the poison pill. When the league and the players association reached a new collective bargaining agreement in 2006, a clause called for eliminating the salary cap in 2010. Both sides assumed an uncapped season would be so distasteful that a new contract would be finalized long before the cap disappeared.

Even when the owners opted out of the CBA in 2008, little thought was given to an actual removal of the salary cap that generally has been beneficial for both owners and players.

Greg Keenan, sports agent and chief executive of Aspire Management whose client Lars Lagerback has just been appointed head coach of Nigeria's national soccer team, gives a peek behind the scenes at how a coach taking a team to the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa in June lands the job. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) interviewed Lagerback, who previously coached Sweden, along with former England coaches Sven-Goran Eriksson and Glen Hoddle, former Senegal coach Bruno Metsu and former Ghana coach Ratomir Dujkovic for the post.

Emotional LT bids farewell to San Diego

POWAY, Calif. - LaDainian Tomlinson bid an emotional farewell to San Diego, then looked toward a future that he hopes will include an elusive Super Bowl title.

"It's definitely sad to leave, but I'm excited, as well, about the future," Tomlinson said during a press conference Wednesday. The Chargers released him Monday after a mostly brilliant nine-year run in which he became one of the greatest running backs in NFL history.

Tomlinson thanked the fans; his teammates throughout the years; the Chargers, for giving him a chance; and lastly, his pregnant wife, LaTorsha, who was sitting to his right in a ballroom at a suburban golf course.

Top 32 prospects: DT Suh gets no push for top spot

I usually love putting quarterbacks atop my annual list of the top 32 NFL Draft prospects. That's how I roll.

Not this year.

That's how much I think of Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh -- he's a beast.

I first really took note of him in the Gator Bowl game after the 2008 season when Nebraska played Clemson. He couldn't be blocked that day, registering two sacks and eight tackles.

He couldn't be blocked at all last season. Did you see his domination of Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game? He was a one-man wrecking crew with four sacks.

That's why he's atop my board, ahead of all the quarterbacks. Not by much, mind you.

Westbrook Vows to Show He Can Still Play

Brian Westbrook plans to play next season. It just won’t be for the Eagles, who cut ties with him Tuesday.

"A lot of things you lack physically, you make up in the mental aspect. That doesn't mean you can't compete at a very high level," Westbrook told CSN's Derrick Gunn. "You see Brian Dawkins, he played here until he was 34 or 35 years old, then went out to Denver and played at a very high level. It can be done. It takes a special player to be able to do that. I have that will to do it, that desire to do it. I am going to train as hard as I can this offseason to come back and show people that I can still play."

All the Suits in Jeter’s Closet Have Pinstripes

We want to believe that Derek Jeter is different. We want to believe that he represents the best in athletics: fair play, sportsmanship, loyalty. For 15 years, he has not let fans down.

There are lots of reasons for that. Jeter joined the right team at the right time, on the cusp of the Yankees’ reinvention as a dynasty. He came from a stable family, secure in himself and respectful of others. He gave up his right to free agency nine years ago, and does not seem interested in shopping himself.
