Twitter account for UNC’s Marvin Austin shut down since NCAA inquiry

RALEIGH, N.C. — Before his Twitter account went dark, North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin posted more than 2,400 updates and built up a following of more than 1,800 people.

The online account provided a social outlet for UNC’s gregarious football star, but his Twitter feed has been disabled since news broke Thursday of an NCAA inquiry into the Tar Heels’ football program. However, a cached version of Austin’s account, ANCHORMANAUSTIN, still exists on Google, with 36 pages of past posts and pictures.

NCAA ramps up probes of agents, Notre Dame football players arrested

For those keeping score at home, the NCAA has started investigating potential violations at North Carolina, South Carolina and now Florida in recent days. All the investigations allegedly put the spotlight on player-agent relationships.

Darren Heitner at SportsAgentBlog.com believes two more schools could be named in probes in coming days. Stewart Mandel at SI.com says the NCAA has focused more on players and agents in the wake of the Reggie Bush probe at USC.

All the activity should make for an interesting August amid the start of training camps.

The agent game

College athletics have been in the headlines for the wrong reasons lately. First, the NCAA levied heavy sanctions against USC's athletic department. Now, football players at several major schools are being accused of having improper contact with an agent and receiving gifts. These are major no-nos, my friends.

College coaches and athletic administrators everywhere have now been put on alert. They have to bring people in to educate their student-athletes. But the bottom line is, these are not little kids. Athletes should know right from wrong.

2011 NFL Draft Sneak Peek

Cortez Allen, CB, Citadel
The small-school ranks produce some very exciting corners who combine size and speed that even the FBS schools can't match. Names like Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Ladarius Webb, and Corey Graham come to mind. Next spring, it might be the Citadel's Cortez Allen that everyone is talking about. He's big and fast and exploded on the scene as a junior last fall. He's sure to get plenty of attention from the NFL this fall.

Game Time: LeBron James -- All Right, Now It's Getting Weird (The Mav Carter Pendant Story)

I wanted to write about Luis Scola today, I really did. I wanted to talk about how good Daryl Morey has to feel that he was able to lock in Scola for an annual number below $10 million per year in a goofy free agent market that has seen $6 million and $7 million per year deals for guys about whom we know either too little (Amir Johnson, Wesley Matthews) or too much (Drew Gooden, Quentin Richardson, who are both seemingly in a race to occupy a spot on every NBA team's roster at some point in their respective careers).

Randy Moss finally hires an agent

Randy Moss has finally decided on an agent to represent him for what will likely be the last big contract of his career. Moss has hired Joel Segal of BEST Football, which boasts clients such as Reggie Bush, Michael Vick, Lee Suggs, Will Smith (the Saints defensive end, not the actor/singer), and Chris Johnson. Aside from Moss, Segal represents Patriots Gerard Warren and Brandon Tate. You can scope out the full list of clients by clicking here. Moss has said this offseason that this will likely be his last with the Patriots because the Patriots “don’t pay,” though the deal he got a few years ago was certainly at market value. I think Vince Wilfork would also disagree with that sentiment as well, though Logan Mankins is probably on Moss’ side. Contrary to popular belief, the Pats do pay, they just don’t usually overpay. Mankins has certainly been given a reasonable offer, but he is being unreasonable in his demands.

Sources: NCAA questions four of UNC's top players

NCAA investigators questioned some of the best football players at the University of North Carolina between Monday and Tuesday about possible improper benefits received from non-university personnel, according to multiple sources close to the situation and school's athletic program.

UNC athletics director Dick Baddour confirmed Thursday that the NCAA had been on campus to interview several athletes, but did not specify what players or sports were involved. Sources familiar with the probe spoke to The Fayetteville Observer, but asked that their names not be used because they are in sensitive positions.

Atlanta-based NFL agents bracing for labor chaos

When all of the NFL draft picks are signed in the coming weeks, the 38 NFL Players Association-certified agents based in Georgia will have negotiated contracts worth close to $200 million.

However, with the ongoing labor dispute and possible lockout for the 2012 season, that gushing river of cash and their commissions could dry up.
