Orioles may find fit with players represented by agent Scott Boras

So the Prince Fielder truck rolled along I-95 without ever stopping on the interstate.

Well, that doesn't mean the Orioles can't get on the Scott Boras Free Agent Bandwagon before spring training starts.

Right-hander Edwin Jackson, the pitcher with the highest upside remaining on the market, is still available. And so is DH/outfielder Johnny Damon, and some other Boras' clients.

Refereeing sports agents

HAPEL HILL -- When news breaks of an NCAA investigation, it's hardly a surprise (at least to those who follow this sort of thing) to hear that a sports agent is somewhere in the mix. Though the names change and the settings move like the Angel of Death from one college town to another, the basic plot hardly varies.

Act One: Sports agent woos student-athlete with payments or perks.

Act Two: NCAA investigates. Agent makes hasty exit. Athlete goes pro.

Act Three: University remains behind to deal with fallout and sanctions

Council broadens agent definition

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Division I Legislative Council tabled several proposals in anticipation of the work of the Transforming Intercollegiate Athletics: Rules Working Group’s recommendations later this year, though it did cast votes Wednesday on several key pieces of legislation.

Council chair Carolyn Campbell-McGovern, senior associate executive director of the Ivy League, said the meeting was different than a customary Council meeting because members didn’t pore over every detail of each proposal.

“We tabled a significant number of proposals in deference to the fact that there are a lot of discussions going on about what our rules need to look like,” Campbell-McGovern said.
