Cheaters Beware! Slaps to The Wrist Can Hurt!

If the NCAA were the disappointed mothers, and the players, coaches, and boosters were the children acting up, this is how the conversation would go. "Now this is going to hurt me more than its going to hurt you." Followed by a spanking that does not hurt. There might be a punishment of being grounded for 2 weeks also. With good behavior, however, it could be reduced to nothing.

This type of punishment never stopped me from doing anything bad as a child. Today I do not find it to be any more effective in the world of sports. Cheating is prevalent all across the board. Kelvin Sampson makes hundreds of illegal phone calls to recruits and was punished, but was it severe enough? My guess would be no seeing as how he was caught doing the EXACT SAME THING a year later.

Cheating has been going on since the beginning of competition. It will never stop, however, there are ways to weed out the cheaters. By greatly stiffening penalties, players, coaches, and boosters will think twice before breaking the rules. Lets pretend that O.J. Mayo is guilty and he has been handed down the most severe penalty in history for receiving benefits. A one year ban from the NCAA and a ban on being drafted until restitution has been made, AND USC forfeits any game in which O.J. Mayo played in. I don't know about you, but that would make me think twice before accepting money from an agent.

My point is, punish these cheaters like you mean it. Cheating will never stop but it can be greatly reduced by imposing penalties that actually makes it look like we care about curbing this problem.

Owen a possible target for Japan's Chiba

TOKYO: Japan's JEF United Chiba are planning an audacious swoop for England striker Michael Owen, Japanese media reported on Tuesday.

The J-League club have just unveiled former Liverpool first-team coach Alex Miller as their new manager and believe Owen can solve the team's current goal-scoring problems.

Japan's Nikkan Sports reported that Chiba officials were preparing an initial approach and that contact had been made with Owen's agent Tony Stephens.

Investing in Yourself; A Primer for the Aspiring Professional Part 2

In part one, I put forward the idea of the athlete thinking of himself as an investment and taking the most effective steps for enhancing the outcome of adopting that way of thinking; namely, increasing your value before entering the professional game and having a long and prosperous career once you make it.

I spoke about exercise and nutrition in the first installment and the importance of learning how to determine what is right for you. I was putting the cart ahead of the horse, so to speak, but I did this because most readers can appreciate the use of exercise and nutrition and I wanted to get you on common ground before I introduced the most important part of any performance program: Stress Management.

And though I have no doubt that you understand the concept of stress in its global sense, I want to provide some specifics for you to think about and put into practice for improving your athletic program.

Senators have made no offers, Redden’s agent says

OTTAWA -- Wade Redden, an unrestricted free agent as of July 1, hasn't rejected any offer to return to the Ottawa Senators mainly because he hasn't received one, his agent said Monday.

Don Meehan also labelled as "nonsense" a report last week that said Redden had rejected a request by the Senators to take as much as a $3-million US pay reduction from the $6.5 million he made last season.

Meehan said he hasn't even yet talked to Senators general manager Bryan Murray, though he expects he will soon, if not during the Memorial Cup then certainly at the draft in Ottawa June 20-21.

Ex-Astros boss McClaren stays busy as agent

From the window of his 22nd-floor downtown office, Bob McClaren can see the scoreboard at Minute Maid Park. It's not quite the same view he once had from his office at Union Station as the Astros' president of baseball operations.

McClaren, 49, still works in the neighborhood, but his career crossover from baseball executive to sports agent has taken him to the other side of the ballpark's railroad tracks.

"You're going to the dark side," longtime friend and sports agent Barry Axelrod told McClaren. "If you come over to the dark side, you may never be able to go back."

OTL probe: Mayo received money, perks from agent reps

In August 2007, a few days before the fall semester began at the University of Southern California, freshman basketball guard O.J. Mayo decided he needed some new clothes for school. His friends, Louis Johnson and Rodney Guillory, picked him up in Guillory's black Infiniti SUV and soon they were at a mall in Carson, Calif., picking out thousands of dollars of clothing.

In the college basketball world, Guillory and Johnson are what's known as "runners" -- middlemen who develop relationships with high-profile athletes with the goal of delivering them to a sports agent when the players turn pro. Johnson is a former Long Beach sportswriter who had met Mayo more than a year earlier and was just getting started in the world of runners. Guillory was an L.A. event promoter who also played a role in the suspension of a USC basketball player in 2000.

Collected Wisdom: Drew Rosenhaus

As a student at the University of Miami, Rosenhaus befriended Hurricanes wide receiver Michael Irvin, who was among the first to suggest to Rosenhaus that he become a sports agent.

Rosenhaus graduated from Miami in three years, then obtained a law degree from Duke.

Today, Rosenhaus is the best known agent in sports, representing many of the top players in the NFL.

That list includes former Oklahoma Sooners Dan Cody and Tommie Harris.

Rosenhaus' affairs in part inspired the popular movie Jerry Maguire, which is about sports agents.

Agents handle it all for athletes

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson was charged with failing a sobriety test while operating a 30-foot boat, then resisting arrest before being hit with pepper spray and dragged ashore by officers.

Benson faces charges of boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest after the incident Saturday night on Lake Travis, Travis County Sheriff's Department spokesman Roger Wade said Sunday.

Benson was released from jail early Sunday on a $14,500 bond. The charges are class B misdemeanors, each punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine. A call to Benson's agent was not immediately returned.

Maxwell Demands Bumper Deal

The Brazilian’s current contract, which runs until 2010, see him earn under ₤1.5 million per year – significantly less than many of his team-mates.

And the 26-year-old is likely to leave Inter if he does not receive a new and improved deal in the very near future, according to his agent Mino Raiola.

“When we arrived in Milan, we received promises from Inter and now wait for them to be kept,” said Raiola in the Corriere dello Sport.

“This is why I am expecting a call from the directors to renegotiate the current contract, otherwise it will be unlikely we’ll see Maxwell playing for Inter next season.”

Statistical Analysis and its Importance

Part One of a Four-Part Series: An Introduction

By Steve Fall

Statistics carry powerful messages. In a contract situation – where a slight edge translates into thousands of dollars – they have a huge impact.

Whether for free agency, arbitration, or contract extension talks, statistics add serious value. They explain and adjust for context. They serve as a comparative tool. They quantify a player’s contribution relative to his teammates, position, league, or even history. They show a player’s importance to his team.

Dolphins' rookie corner Billingsley turning heads

DAVIE - Will Billingsley's recent rise from forklift driver to Dolphins signee is the kind of cheesy story line sports movies like Invincible are based on.

Much like Vince Papale, a 30-year-old bartender whose journey to make the 1976 Eagles inspired the movie, this former North Carolina A&T safety also must overcome long odds to make an NFL roster.

But if Billingsley continues to make steady progress, impressing Dolphins coaches and executives like he did in the eye-opening predraft workout that got him signed in early April, one day his fellow factory workers at ABB Incorporated might be able to brag they once worked beside him.

"Been here two days and you're a star?" Dolphins vice president Bill Parcells said with a good-natured needle when he spotted Billingsley doing an interview after Saturday's practice, which featured him turning on the afterburners to bat away a deep pass during 7-on-7 drills. "Keep it up."

Suns coach Mike D'Antoni has been granted permission to speak with NBA teams, including the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks, according to Sports 620 KTAR's Paul Calvisi.

D'Antoni was previously denied permission to speak with any team, Suns GM Steve Kerr told KTAR last week.

Kerr and owner Robert Sarver met with D'Antoni for a lunch meeting on Friday to discuss his future with Phoenix, but it was reported a decision would not be made until later in the week.

North American Boxing Federation super bantamweight champion Bernabe Concepcion’s planned May 17 fight in Aguascalientes, Mexico wont push through and instead he will see action on the “Lethal Combination” fight card headlined by Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and WBC lightweight champion David Diaz at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hitel & Casino in Las Vegas on June 28.
