In this state the regulation of occupations is assigned to various state agencies, and sports agents are under the jurisdiction of the N.C. Department of State. The secretary of state, Elaine Marshall, is pursuing in court allegations of improprieties at UNC-Chapel Hill. These efforts should proceed to conclusion without interference from alternative and distractive proposals.
Self-regulation by private groups is notoriously insufficient. As a person with more than 30 years experience regulating occupations in North Carolina, I believe the power of state statutes, rules and subpoenas is essential for effective control of sports agent activities.
